Growing up, my dad was a country singer/comedian. We traveled all over the country doing shows. I got to be on stage with him at the Grand Ole Opry when I was pretty young but I still remember it.
I sang some with him when I was younger but stopped as I started getting into the teen years. Probably a good thing, I think people liked me because I was young and all. Anyway, I got to meet some of the biggest country music stars of the time. I met Ernest Tubb, Charlie Walker, Lorrie…

Thinking of you today
and all the things we shared
when no one else seemed interested
you acted like you cared
It's just the way I felt
I guess they maybe did
I never could quite feel it
Although I knew I should
Sugar cookies, petit fours
and twenty dollar bills
secrets known and never spoken
Perhaps we never will.
Glass figurines
pralines
ice cream and lady fingers
Sweets in a world
Like a snow…

Our fellow member Sherry went to a writing class and received the assignment to write your biography in short approx 3 word phrases separated by commas. No complete sentences. She shared hers with us, and I thought I'd give it a try. Who else wants to put their whole life in a paragraph of phrases with us? Here's what I came up with ...
yellow fuzzie blankie, elephants, house full, nursery school piano, the way is always in the music, magnus chord organ, uncle vit's pipe, hello…

Last night I went to my first creative writing class. In our first exercise everyone came up with a word they liked or didn't like. Then we had to create a story with them. It was a lot of fun, and a great way to jump start creative juices.
For homework we had to tell our life story using short 1-3 word phrases, separating each thought or event with a comma.
The idea so intrigued me that I came home and did the exercise. I thought I would share it here so the members can know a lot…

Winslow lay curled in a white ball of fur at my feet. A crisp, cool Autumn breeze sailed through the screen door, beckoning my four legged friend and I to grab the leash and head out into the beauty of the day. I took his leash from it's hook and held it up for Winslow to see. "Do you want to go for a walk," I said to him excitedly. He launched himself from his place of rest and spun in wild and frantic circles. In an effort to not alert the napping…

Hearing about the shooting that took place at Ft. Hood, Texas today brought the memories of losing a friend at Virginia Tech in 2007 crashing back into place. I am sick to my stomach at the atrocity of people shooting each other, but as Pres. Obama said, "It’s difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil." Twelve people were killed today, at least seven of which were soldiers most…

Chapter One – Lucas
“Damn it,” Lucas exclaimed when he nearly tripped over Trooper, his three-legged chocolate lab while rushing around his small bedroom. “I’m never going to make it at this rate!”
He was getting ready for a romantic evening his girlfriend of three years had planned, though there was no occasion. What a woman, Lucas thought when she told him to look nice for a special night on the town, her treat.
Lucas Treadwater and Claire Danson met in their sixth grade year…

Eyes
blue like china seas
unfathomed
endless
I've seen these
before
like skies
far reaching as line of water meets sand
unbroken
steady in their gaze
with twinkling wisdom
trusting me.
My father's eyes?
crinkled corners
knowing smile
not cloud nor cataract to disguise
truth
the heart remembers what the years forget
a life become survival mechanism
incessant like catechism
Eyes deep as ancient…

I have a song you might like to listen to about a ghost I met in Colorado, but I'm not sure how to send it to you... I could send the lyric, but the song has a specific sound that makes it something.

As writers we take our shots where and when we can get them. A recent adventure to the Austin Film Festival proved to be just the inspiration I needed. If you are an aspiring screenwriter, or writer in general, this was the place to be. First I must mention one of the classes I took was called A Shot of Inspiration, and as the class was in session, Daniel Petrie, Jr. writer of
Beverly Hills Cop, The Big Easy, and Shoot to Kill, passed around shots of whiskey.…

I'm sitting in front of a warm, glowing fire. Everyone else in the house - meaning husband, the big, barky dog, and the demanding cat have curled up and fallen asleep. I have reading by the fire on my schedule, but first I wanted to share a few things with family, friends, and readers.
Writers often hear that readers want to peek inside their lives and that their blogs are a good place to do that. To share a little of what's on our minds. Sometimes writers are very, very good about…

The ghost didn't really feel it ever had much of a chance.
It was an average ghost, of average height and girth. It had an average personality, and an average i.q. It had experienced, yes, quite an average life before being relegated to ghostdom.
It had died on a gurney, whilst being wheeled to a waiting ambulance, after choking on a large chunk of tuna in a sushi restaurant. All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't squeeze that goddamn piece of fish out of…

Have to share this - not really entering the contest, but I thought this was a little spooky. I never knew "orbs" until my daughter explained them to me (she's very much into the paranormal). I took this photo a couple of weeks ago and have no explanation for the little "reflection" at the base of the tree, especially since the sun was shining on the other side of said tree. This was taken in a park, but on the grounds is a very old house with a very small (only two headstones) cemetery. I was…

These days, it seems that almost everybody has a friend or family member in the Armed Services, stationed "over there". With the holiday season fast approaching, we can do great good by helping our brave loved ones to be able to get in touch with their folks at home by donating to this very worthy and practical program that the USO runs each year. If you are interested in making a difference for someone who has to spend their holiday season so very very far from home, please go…

It was a tough day today. Mom was on my mind a lot and I'm not sure why. She usually creeps up on me at odd and random times, like when I try to call someone and automatically begin to dial her number, a number that hasn't reached her in just over two years now; or I think of something that I know she'd have appreciated and then realize she's no longer there to tell anymore. Today it began while I was running errands and realized the stores had all the Christmas decorations and diplays up…

I remember folding the freshly laundered onesies and putting them away. I sat in the rocking chair, a warm August breeze blew the white eylet curtains ever so slightly. I scrunched my toes into the thick pile of sand colored carpet and took it all in. Blue bunnies sat on crooked alphabet letters and seemed to parade across the wallpaper of the nursery. The brand new cherrywood crib shone as the sun bounched of the side. I had dreamed of the day our…

Here's To Us'

Here's to the people who make things happen
Workers of body and mind
Those who tote barges and lift up bales
And hang their lives on the line
Here's to those who accomplish a little
And those who accomplish a lot
Those who make breakfast and pour morning coffee
And paint lines on the parking lot
Here's to the others, the culprits and misfits
The ones who don't fit at…
