where creative minds can interact

"Kindred Stranger"

The fire fades to embers as I listen
to the sounds of the forest night.
Crickets create a loud chorus
as owls and the breeze add their
own harmonies.

An injured animal waits for
a pause in the night's song
to let up it's pained complaint,
and as I listen, a chill crawls
up my spine.

If I were to make a sound
to express my feelings right at
this moment, that is what I would
sound like; dangerously loud and
wild... And alone.

The knowledge that something
out in these woods feels the same
way as I is strangely comforting,
and I go to bed feeling as though
I'm not completely alone in the world.

When I wake up in the morning,
I know my pained friend made
it through the night. We suffered
together, that animal and I, and
we both survived.

This is truly wonderful, Steen. I've known that feeling. I like especially how you capture the animal cry that lies deep in all of us. A friend asked me once, after I had sent him an audio file of a wolf howl, why it is that we are so drawn to these mournful sounds. Perhaps this is it. They are native to us. They are as much our heritage as our laughter yet, unlike laughter, they are closeted in polite society.

Steen, Your words, stories, poetry and your photos are brimming with grace and vitality! You Are a poem-perhaps about a lovely, hourglass shaped amphora filled with a sweet essential oil.....patchouli methinks! Just waiting to be decanted, thus to waft over the senses of all in range.

Thank you for your kind words, Kimberlyann... That means quite a lot to me as a writer. Your dream sounds beautiful and I'm glad we could relate through poetry!

This is so beautiful, Steen. I can relate more than I could ever say through words. I once had a vision/
dream of sleeping on a leaf while curled up in fetal position, waking to the dew kissing my cheek.
You brought me back to that leaf for a moment...Thank you!
