Sleep Is... Jameson Colbert

Since this is my first writing on this site, I've decided to accept the 'Sleep Is...' challenge in August 2010.

Sleep is sleep. It is where most animals and people find solace from the busy world around them. Animals hunt for hours on end to feed themselves and their young. Not only do they have to worry about food, but about shelter and safety. A lioness's primary job is to protect her cubs from the harsh environment of the savannah. Such details of the harshness…

Behind Every Smile

If you look closely

Through every tear

There is a memory

Some good, some bad

But for each tear I cry

A part of me is there for you to see

The same is true for every smile

Every time I…

June 15, 2011 Creative Writing Challenge - My Dad...

I tend to write a LOT about my dad.  It isn't that I loved my mother less, but more that I loved my dad in a whole and complete way that my mom wouldn't have cared for.  She was a bit more aloof and saved her love for special moments.  Daddy just loved.  Straight up, in your face, like it or not.  Love.  And he was…

My Simple Brain

I had a dream my family was spread across land and sea

They were of every race and creed

Some as black as velvet night

Others as pale as the brightest sunlight

A vast bounty of mountains and terrain between

Still we can feel our hearts sight unseen

Providing care for the young and old

Giving food and shelter…

No title as of yet

When you look into my eyes

Do you see the tears I shed for you?

The eyes are the windows to the soul

Or so I'm told

So if you look into mine

What do you see?

I am bad with direct eye contact…

Blech---too hot to cook--Try this one out!

Knowing how I like my eggs (over easy) I believe that an egg cooked on today's sidewalk, would be grossly overcooked!  That being said, it is wayyyy to hot too heat up your kitchen on a day like today!  If you have some leftover pasta hanging out in your refrig, this recipe is for you.  Most of the ingredients can be found in your produce and deli aisle, making it a perfect summer meal.

Tonight, I'm doing a variation on this, as try to reduce red meat in our diet. …

My calendar lets me know

So why are you still thinking about all of those yesterdays?

If I could find the sands of time

And take back what once was…

Wacky Wedding

I didn't attend my parents' wedding, but the stories are too fun not to share!

First - the dress. Every woman has their perfect dress in mind. It's beautiful, fits perfectly, and usually costs a fortune. My mom was a size 0, and assumed it would be easy to find the perfect gown.

... Not so much. The only dress she could find to fit well came from a Sears catalog. Seriously.

My mom loves lace. So she got a wedding dress with lace on…

Weird wedding? Not TOO weird.

Probably not quite as weird as some (like the one we went to where the bride's large portrait was featured in front of the appetizer table), but there was one...the bride forgot her slip, but the minister wouldn't let her run home to get it.  Might not have mattered with a "normal" wedding gown, but this was gauze...  He was probably just concerned that the wedding might "run over" - not good since he'd decided to squeeze this young…

Living In My Dreams

I reach out my hand to you

You take it and smile that lazy smile

Each time you look at me

I find my breath taken away

It's amazing the power your look & touch have over me

Things started out so strong

With so much promise and hope for a wonderful future

The feelings we have for one another have…

June 2 Creative Writing Challenge - The Weirdest Wedding I Ever Attended...

Maybe it was only weird because I didn't know anyone except my husband and the groom.  Or maybe it was only weird because it was the only Native American ceremony I'd ever been to.  Or maybe it was only weird because we'd driven around lost for 45 minutes knowing that the wedding wasn't going to start till we got there and that when we finally did get there we would be the reason for the delay.  Or maybe it wasn't weird at…

"In Flanders Fields the Poppies Blow..."

My father was not a poet and not the type to go around quoting poetry. But for some reason, every Memorial Day he would recite this poem from memory. He was born just after World War I ended, and he was a  World War II Vet himself. He never said why he liked or recited this poem, but he used to always bring me a Poppy on Memorial Day that he got from his VFW post. So, I just thought I'd post it up, in order  that we could all remember the enormous amount of sacrifice that has been put forth…

Mini Skillet Meatloaves!

"Mommmmmmm--meatloaf again?"  You'll never hear this in MY house because I am not a big fan of meatloaf.  However, this recipe caught my attention--individual loaves--check.  Tangy sauce--check.  No need to scrub the meatloaf pan--CHECK!  Extra sauce on the side is welcomed, as it is delightfully delicious to drag that delectable bite through the delicate sauce and gobble up every morsel on your plate!  The final straw is my children loved it--CHECK.

This freezes beautifully…

Reading Adventure # 1 ... Loving What Is ~ a book by Byron Katie

Loving What Is by Byron Katie is book number 1 of 13 on my first list of  must read  books. As mentioned in my previous blog, my list of must read is comprised of books that I own but have yet to read.  Yes, I have books collecting dust and books…

Book List Number One, Day One ... Nightstand Collection

As I considered the wonderful task of reading all my unread treasures I was overwhelmed with just where to begin. Do I start making my list by going through all my bookcases, or going through the books all neatly lined up on the floor in my office or? My head was just numb with too much thinking and not enough doing. I took the thought of making a list and parked it in the back of my mind and crawled into bed. That is where the proverbial light bulb went off. I reached towards my…

It's SPRING, right???

It seems to me as if we have fired straight through spring right into summer!  After spending a hot day inside a humid middle school with a host of malodorous middle school students, I was ready to cruise home, fire up the AC and let the cooling begin.  Hitting the screen door, flying through the kitchen--I dropped my bags on the counter.  My sweaty palms flew to the thermostat to dial up the cool air.  Click....click...nada.  Sweat dripped from my brow as I hastily dialed my…
