Memories of the Challenger from Concord, NH - 26 years ago today

26 years ago today, the Challenger tragedy touched the entire nation, but nowhere more than Concord, NH schoolkids.  My son was a 5th grader.  Every morning, everyone had watched the launch preparations on local cable station, which had a special feed, and seen the technician give Christa McAuliffe an apple, and the astronauts take that walk to the bus to go out to the shuttle.  And finally they launched, icicles notwithstanding.  Every parent in my building left early to be home with their kids.  The school lunch program had designed the menu around Christa McAuliffe's planned meals.  I will never forget Kevin telling me how they all watched the launch, saw the explosion, and then went to the cafeteria for lunch, where they had the lunch were supposed to share with Christa; he said that's when it hit him that she would never share a meal with anyone again.  Heartbreaking days

Very heartbreaking ... I still remember that day like it was yesterday as I watched in disbelief but I and my children did not have the connection you had ... so heartbreaking

oh, so sad, robin. i had alot of memories around those days as well, but mine were different. my father had just died, and he had worked on the space program a good deal of his life. so it was very strange and weird and sad that the challenger met with this fate at the same time. all bad. thank you for sharing this.
