I’ve never met a garden I didn’t like, although some I’ve taken to more than others. Growing up, we always had a huge vegetable patch, which we had to toil in, so on hot, sweaty days I didn’t favor that kind.
There is another…

He left long ago
But his old baggage remained.
She just threw it out.

Skipping ahead a bit but this one was just "there" this morning and I needed to get it out of the way.
Her side:
“A ghost?”
Spoken more as a statement than a question with that look he reserves for my more “whackadoodle” comments and ideas.
“Yes. A ghost. I don’t know any other way to describe it. I was out in the garden…”
I might as well have been talking to a…

Convoluted thoughts
Arrive in the night's wee hours
And crowd out slumber.

So much stuff to do!
Running hard to stay even.
A short nap might help.

I have gone most of my life without ever hearin' of Leonard Cohen. Don't ask me how, cuz I don't even know! Sorta like Bob Dylan, he's criticized cuz his singin' voice isn't very pretty. But who in the world cares about a singin' voice when you can write songs like that?!?!
The lyric comes from "Anthem", and if you know the song, you know it's chock full of meaningful lyrics. If you don't know the song, here's a link.…

...to grandmother's house we go'.......took on a different meaning to me after visits to Grandma Reiley's house.
Prior to that I envisioned fun and adventure and mystique and gingerbread cookies and all sorts of wonder.
. At Grandma Reiley's we got out of the car to discover a skinny, plainly dressed woman with thin lips and a dour look on her face. No KoolAid or punch at grandma's house. No cookies and milk. Just a simple meal with water. After saying grace. Simple times.
I never…

Five things I have learned in life that I would want to pass on to the younger generations....
1) Do not drink and drive, ever. You might get away with it for years or you might get busted your first time, but getting busted is only one thing that could go wrong. Not only could you get into a lot of trouble, have to pay hefty fines, lose your license, (if you even have one) and maybe even sit jail time...which by the way is a whole another story entirely; you could also get hurt…

This is the first year I did not have to fill out a permission slip or deal with parent teacher conferences or the other trappings of public school. At this time last year I was staring down the finish line of my youngest daughters senior year. It had been a long time coming. After many years of dealing with three children who were not go with the flow inside the box types (apple doesn't fall far from the tree) I was almost finished. Sure I was worried about the "real world" freak out that…

He is a Leo, same as my dad was. But I don't think I view him as a father figure.
No, I'm
certain I don't.
He was born in California; I don't hold that against him since he makes a better cowboy than any I've met here in Texas. Then too, they were cowboyin' out on the left coast long before it became cool to do so. And, like so many other things, they cowboy slow and easy out in California. Taking his time; I'd let him take his time. He…

I’m really great at my job. I’m not being boastful, cuz it’s true. There aren’t a whole lot of people who would, number one, do what I do, and number two, have a high level of success. I teach students with special needs. Not just Learning Disabled, Resource Room/Content Mastery kids. I teach…

Ruts in the writing life happen. We grasp our way through a story, do the research, and realize it’s not the one we’re supposed to tell. At least not yet. We bump along in that rut for awhile until a new path
appears, scattered with red and…

This is a poem which I wrote many long years ago. To give it some context, I have had the frog in question following me around for all of my adult (not grown-up) life and it's orgins were back in my childhood. I was raised in Northern Minnesota not terribly far from where my father grew up. My mother was a southern girl from the state of Virginia and endured the northern climes, but we regularly vacationed in the south and were always surrounded by her large and loving family. My…
