My cheeks are burning -
Sunscreen, hat and long clothing
My face is still red.

Creative Writing Challenge #9 - Did 9/11 Change You?

I'm going to cheat a bit on this one and add a blog I wrote a year ago on the anniversary. For one, I hate that the media will drag us all through those dark hours over and over and over as if the grief of the aftermath of that day weren't enough or none of us can remember and need to see it all again in order to recall it. I so wish they'd find more positive ways to honor those who died and those who must live on. And too, I think the question is a bit odd. How could we NOT all be changed…

Raining Cats and Dogs

Quite literally, it has always seemed to rain animals at our house. Little ones, mostly. Of all types. Squirrels, various birds, snakes, lizards, rabbits. And the occasional cat or dog. Not that they fall out of the sky. But they might as well. They fall into our laps.

Usually it's been one of the kids finding some critter that fell out of a nest. Or that they somehow came home from school with. Like the crawfish. And the bullfrog. And, of course, Treasure the Chicken. Who lasted a few… Continue

I wish I could sing
And make music with my voice.
I can make people laugh.

More rain and more rain.
Maybe it will continue
For forty more days.

Creative Writing Challenge #8 - Five Sure Things

Dear Younger Person Who Thinks You've Got It All Sussed Out,

You don't. That's the first thing I know without a doubt as I look back over half a century of living. Until your knees start to crack when you walk and your back aches even when you've just gotten out of bed and your bladder won't hold half a beer for as long as it takes you to walk to the head and you really can't read the fine print and the thought of biting into a firm, crisp, green… Continue

Little Girls

I wrote this next one after watching & listening to so much drama in our pods. It was pretty sad & pathetic actually, but the truth of it is; it's all very real on the outside too. It was just more concentrated on the inside with no where to get away from it.

Little Girls

Over eight-teen and grown

We know the rules

Taught how to act

Please, excuse me, & thank you

Common sense, respect, &…

People

People

Men cheat

Women lie

Bashing one another

Racist and ignorant

It's easy to point the finger

There's good and bad in us all

No one's perfect

It's easy to remember the past

To remain bitter

And hard to open up and trust

It's not men or women

Not black or white

Not the young and naive or the old and jaded

Not the rich or the…

What I Didn't Do On Summer Vacation

There are several times a year when we as human beings feel compelled to set our houses in order by making a Resoution. The most obvious is New Year's. This practice, indeed, has worldwide following. We are going to get organized, get in shape, start that diet, find the perfect relationship. Sadly, amost as soon as the champagne goes flat, so does our resolve. Then comes Lent. Traditionally within the Christian community this seems to have more success perhaps because of a nagging fear that we… Continue

What I didn't do on my summer vacation..

There is a whole list of things I did not do. The summer always starts out so promising. It seems open and endless at the beginning. It's very much like the first day of school. All the things that you promise to accomplish somehow get tossed by the wayside. I wish I worried less and lived more. I wish walked like I promised myself I would. It is so freeing! With work and home life there seemed like there was not a point this summer were I was not physically and emotionally exhausted. The… Continue

Soon

Here is the first of three of the next batch of poems I wrote last month....

I can almost see your face

And feel the joy it brings me

Your little hands reach for mine

But you're just out of reach

The tears slide down my cheeks

It troubles me deeply

The last time you left here

You were grounded

I'm not angry anymore

I just want to hold you

You bring me such joy

Your…

WCWC #7, What I didn't do this summer, but secretly wish I had

Well the list of things I didn't do this summer, but secretly wish I had is endless. I wish I'd gone camping and spent time with nature and my friends. The last time I went camping was in August of 2008. It was a three day camping/music event. It was so much fun. The many dj's there brought many styles of music. There were people spinning fire, amazing to watch! I sat there in a sort of trance while they wove the fire around in artistic movements. I had a desire to get up and get closer, but I… Continue

Wiffledust Creative Writing Challenge #7-"What I Didn't Do On My Summer Vacation But Secretly Wish I Had..."

Alaska. That's what I didn't do on my summer vacation, but secretly wished I had. I'm an Alaskaphile. I should probably be in a twelve-step program. I could claim my obsession is the direct result of living in a dust colored, pancake-flat, semi-arid state where the annual snowfall is measured in negative numbers. But the truth is, I have no idea where this came from. I just found it one day whilst rambling around inside my head and haven't been able to get rid of it. The closest I've been is… Continue

Lost

I said that I'd share the poems I wrote while in jail, well I am starting to get around to that. :P I will post three today and more later. Here's my first one.

Tears keep falling all around me

Walking through the salty puddles

They splash up and drench me

Soaked and freezing cold

I feel so lost

The sky is dark and I can't see

I'm trying to find You

I'm reaching my hand…
