Creative Writing Challenge #8 - Five Sure Things

Dear Younger Person Who Thinks You've Got It All Sussed Out,
You don't. That's the first thing I know without a doubt as I look back over half a century of living. Until your knees start to crack when you walk and your back aches even when you've just gotten out of bed and your bladder won't hold half a beer for as long as it takes you to walk to the head and you really can't read the fine print and the thought of biting into a firm, crisp, green apple is immediately followed by the thought that you might just break a tooth, and you find yourself wondering where the hell you parked the car, you really, REALLY don't know jack. It's going to take you a lot longer to learn what's important and what can be left behind and how to leave the things and places and people that don't really matter at the end of the day. And how to make peace with the fact that the day is ending. Right now you think there's a whole life ahead of you. Trust me, it's traveling much faster than you realize. Then one fine day you're going to wake up and realize that a whole lot of stuff you used to think was important isn't and you really don't care. Then, my friend, you'll have it all down. Even so, keep learning. Your mind never goes feeble as long as you use it.
Number Two. Just like my grandma used to tell me, don't put all your eggs in one basket. I figure you need three, maybe four baskets. Possibly five to be really safe. And what this means (since I know I need to break it down into language you may just speak) is that trying every new thing that comes along is great until you look around and there's nothing new to try. Save some of it for later on. Hang back and watch what happens before you jump in and use it all up. Keep some secrets about yourself. Save a small bit to share on a special day or person.
Three. Learn to dance, and then DANCE!! Dance in the kitchen when nobody else is home. Dance when you get good news. Dance when your heart is breaking. Dance with someone old who maybe doesn't dance so much anymore. Don't give a rip if you're good at it, just do it. Dance like you're teaching the class.
Four. Don't be afraid to sample the goods before you decide to buy. The hardest thing to overcome is knowing that you really didn't pay attention to what you were getting until you got it and really didn't like it. This goes for cars, tattoos, babies, and life partners.
Five. Don't give your heart to anyone you wouldn't want for your best friend. If you would fall in love with someone you really wouldn't consider your best friend, you will wake up miserable eventually and so will they.
