Await those who look for them
In a book's pages.

Solemn vows of tempestuous light
Overshadowed by songs of time
A place where the rain falls softly
On crimson roses fallen behind
The kiss of dew set upon the green
A vision in the warmth of a fire
A guardian covers the sky with clouds
Granting hearts with care's desire
Pathways to tread drowned by the sea
A forgotten past that closed with your eyes
Breathe your last existing… Continue

Softly she whispers,
"Can you take me to bed now?
I'm sleepy, Mommy."

Your skin is translucent, like fine china
I can see just far enough to discern your names,
To feel the spear-tip anger that built your fortress.
I wish I were prettier.
Not just better than the thieves and grifters…

[ I was asked to write an occasional poem for the tenth anniversary of the Broome County Library. It is more precisely a poetic speech, which I performed at their gala a few weeks ago. I am told it will be done in calligraphy and hung on the wall there.]
It is ten years this library has stood,
open to all who would attend their minds…

Being You
You being you and me being me,
I often wonder what it is that you see.
What is it you like?
How do I compare?
Can I ever measure up to one so fair?
You're respected, revered, multi-talented to boot.
Am I just a novelty, only a trinket that's cute?
Enigmatic, undefined, the highest compliment, it's true.
With the questioned unasked you answered "Thank you for being you."

'When You Gotta Go'
copyright 2010 by Rick Reiley
Dig my grave, make it shallow
Heck just lay me on the ground
Clear a path and play the fiddle
And then dance all around
I have had a good ride
So carry on with the show
I'd just as soon stay here
But when you gotta go -you gotta go
(Chorus)
When you gotta go-You gotta go
If you're gonna get there on time
I hope to see you later
In the afterglow…

"To Bed We Go" are not right.
But thanks for playing.

To believe that human activity is the single greatest threat to life on earth tends to take on a view of absolute power, something humans have engaged in for millennia and in doing so have wrongly thought themselves omniscient. If we were actually able to control and understand a thing so much greater than ourselves I might be tempted to accept Scott Lewis’ assertion that present day extinction is linked to human activity and we are therefore solely responsible for the loss of so many of the…

He was The Little Prince, with hair “the color of gold” and a laughter that bounced from the stars. Like The Little Prince, his eternal curiosity drove him to explore and ask questions, ignoring boundaries imposed by adults who didn’t understand. This could be seen in his searching eyes, reaching up through raised eyebrows as a child looking to his father. Occasionally his unearthly wisdom betrayed his youthful persona, revealed through a…

I don't miss you like I did before.
I thought perhaps I'd miss you more.
The space you filled is empty now,
but still, I don't miss you.
We blossomed and were beautiful indeed.
The garden was still plagued with weeds.
The beds are empty, dead, and bare,
but still, I don't miss you.
Your life goes on much the same.
I was weary of playing…

I'm writing this in honor of my daughter, Jaime. It's National Daughter's Week. I remember the day she was born just like it was yesterday. She was the most beautiful pink little
baby girl. I knew my life would be blessed from the day she took her
first breath. I so wanted a girl. None of us as mother's can begin to
imagine how our relationship will develop. Some things need to remain
untold for…
