I peruse my books of quotations each morning for something inspirational to post on Facebook. Today I came across a quotation that lingered in my splintered subconscious all day and demanded further consideration. The quote is by Norman Cousins. "Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live." I suppose he could have been referring to desire, ideas, motivation, love, hope and compassion, just to name a few. But I have found that when one desire dies, a new one is born and along with it the ideas and motivation that fuel it. First love never dies and from it we draw what is necessary for love that follows. Perhaps the death of hope and compassion is to be feared or mourned above all because those are the very essence of humanity.
