Our Dream Deferred

Walking hand in hand

Silently, but for the sound of our footsteps on the ground

The leaves crunch underneath our weight

Brilliant yellows, oranges, & reds

The air is beginning to cool

It feels nice after the long warm September day

I tilt my head ever so slightly

So that I can catch a glimpse of your face

A smile plays on your lips as you do the same

Many times, there is much to say

But, not today

And that's okay

Sometimes our favorite moments

Are the ones like these

I never would have thought I could be so happy

So content with someone

That I could enjoy wordless hours at a time

I hear everything you have to say when you look at me

It took such a long time for us to get here

We've been through so much

Both together and apart

Before I found you, I was a mess

And in some ways

So were you

And then we met

There was a spark no one could explain

Least of all you or I

But we knew it was something special

There's no one for me but you

I am so blessed

But our road has not been an easy one

Many twists and turns

We've fallen along the way

I have scooped up the scars

Here they are in a jar

To remind of us of how very far we've come

And though it's not perfect

I suppose no love is

It's perfect for us

You get me in a way no one else has

I don't even have to say a word

And you know how I feel

I have watched you soar

Fall a little

And then get back up

And fly even higher

Your dreams paint red and gold across the sky

I dance with the colors, feeling their power

I have always believed in you

And oddly enough

You believe in me too

You make me want to touch the sky

See my goals become reality

You see the me I am meant to be

You're more than my greatest love

Though you are definitely that too

But you are also my dearest friend

I love lying next to you

Telling you about my accomplishments and my fears

And you touch each smile & catch all of my tears

The nights when you come home in a mood

I know to let you be

And in time, it begins to fade

You eventually tell me about your day

Work is your greatest passion

But also your greatest stress

It's been worth it though

All the long hours

The injuries

They have paid out in the end

And not just in the bank

The sense of accomplishment I see in your eyes is amazing

We're both so different

And yet so very much the same

I can't believe we're here

Walking together

In our own little world

Total serenity

And then I wake up

You're not here

But nor are you gone

Though I have woken up

My dream isn't lost

It's to that hope that I hold onto

It's not a dream yet realized

But, nor is it tossed aside

There is still a chance for you & I

So I bide my time

Doing what I must, as you do the same
