Ode to Lucy

Here is an ode to our three month old puppy

She is very playful & full of so much energy

Where are my manners, I must make an apology

Let me introduce you to the lovable & rambunctious Lucy

I grew up with cats being my companions

In every way, cats to me over dogs were champions

I felt that dogs in general were hard to train & just plain mean

For me, it was best if they weren’t a part of my daily scene

There was their smell to contend with & their hair getting all over me

If I had to be around them, I silently prayed that they’d just leave me be

I swore I’d never own dogs, never have to train one to sit or take them out to pee

That from all of the burdens & responsibilities of owning one, I’d be free

But then came along a man most precious to my heart

One whom has had my love from our very start

He is my synonym in many ways, though an opposite in others

Like to him, cats were pests & dogs are just playful & furry type brothers

A little ways down the road, we found an adorable black kitty

His little paws & tiny mews had taken a hold of me

Once named Onyx, my beloved said he supposed it was meant to be

So from his home at Hoffer’s, Onyx was set free

He did fall in love with our little kitten

It’s true, it wasn’t long before he was smitten

But still within him a passion for dogs did burn

In his heart, a passion to have one of his own did yearn

Months later, my brother’s dog had 11 puppies

Upon a visit there, something was known to him instantly

He wanted to choose one for us to make a part of our little family

So together we picked one out & then we named her Lucy

On Christmas Day 2013, we brought her home to meet Onyx

It wasn’t love at first sight, but in their own way, they did mix

As time has gone by, we’ve seen them play together

Hoping that over time, they’ll become best friends forever

I am still not entirely used to having a puppy

But I must admit, she has begun to grow on me

Her sad eyes & cuddles are adorable, well it’s so easy to see

That when I hold her, I am happy Lucy is a part of our little family
