where creative minds can interact
Labels can be found on water bottles & soup cans
But all too often they are found on our fellow man
We have all been guilty of judging others
Though instead we should love our sisters & brothers
That girl in the colorful outfit dancing to electronic music must be on drugs
And that boy dressed in all black sitting alone looks like he needs hugs
The well dressed man drinking espresso must have a superiority complex
While the woman in the short skirt & high heels must be looking for sex
Stereotypes exist because a fair number of people seem to fit within a specific label
But even within that group, how well do we know them & what they bring to the table?
And beyond that, we just decide by looking at someone that they must indeed that label fit
When in reality, we haven’t the faintest clue of their intelligence, emotions, humor, or wit
Many might appear to either not notice or not care
But speaking from experience, it hurts when people whisper & stare
Please don’t assume you know me based on what you see
Instead why don’t you actually try getting to know me?
Based on appearance, religious beliefs, our job, or even our family ties
We judge others & then some take it even further & start telling lies
Upon looking at someone, there is still so much about them we haven’t a clue
I think it’s time we stop judging & labeling people, don’t you?
I have been guilty of it myself & so I know that this goes out to me as well
It’s so easy to look at someone & think we know all there is to tell
But having been on the receiving end of things, I know that’s not true
The truth is, until we talk, you don’t really know me & I really don’t know you

A person's ingredients, love it Maryanne!!!! That puts my piece into a new light, even for me. :)
I have been in big discussions about labels and in those discussions it comes down to just how does one describe another without using words that label? I think this is one of your better pieces, your flow of words is great and I enjoyed reading this. I began to think of the word Label and just what is involved with a label? You mention "soup" and I think you poem is speaking of a person's ingredients that go way beyond a label :-)
Thank you, Lisa! My friend's post on Facebook actually inspired the post. He was judging a certain class of people and made it me angry. I then turned the anger into this. :)
i'm guilty too. we all are. but being aware of it is more than half the battle. thanks for using your art to shed light on an important topic. i particularly like the last phrase…"you don't really know me & I really don't know you" . very powerful and very true.
