I understand now choosing the beautiful tile. Glad it was saved! I can only imagine the before and after shots .. those are always so interesting to see. We live in a house that is over 100 years old, used to be a school, then Grange Hall, then Mormon church and the photos of "then" to now are fun to see

It was a working fireplace but it's now a historical house and it's been completely refurbished.  There was coal mining going on underneath it to the point of almost causing the house to collapse until the preservation society stepped in and made them stop mining directly under the house.  The house was lowered by several inches on one side causing fractures in the walls and doorways.  They have some amazing before and after photos in the main gallery, in the basement.

I have to ask; is that just a storage area for firewood? If not, and it is a fireplace I would imagine the tiling getting all sooty and what a horrible job to have to clean it!
