where creative minds can interact

For those of you who aren't aware, I am a romance novelist. A novel concept considering I've been out of the romance/relationship and particularly dating arena for quite a few years. My last first date was actually in 1992. So, after reviewing my first (yet to be published) novel I questioned its authenticity or realistic value. I sat my 25 year old daughter down for a few questions.

"Okay," I queried. "What's the rule for a call back after the first date? Do women call men? How many dates before sex? How does a person know if someone is interested? How does a person convey they are interested in someone?"

"Mom," she replied with exasperation. "There are no rules. No one knows what their doing. My generation hang out, make out and if you make out a second time, you're an item. And the generation behind me just text, then have sex."

I laughed at her joke. SHE WASN'T JOKING!!!!

When did the art of flirting, the cat and mouse play, the dance of love, and the anitcipation of romance go by the wayside? I considered how out of date my representation of romance might be, but was informed by the 25 year old that it would appeal to the demographic I was writing to.

A full ten seconds passed before I could breathe, much less respond. So, I return to that magical place called romance, also known as fiction, and ask for any input you, as a reader of this post and participant of the dance, can offer.

I think the cat and mouse play is just as fun as the rest! ;)

For most, I think that the texting and online messaging is a way for kids to put on a front, but underneath, when it comes down to it, they're just as self-conscious and unsure as kids have always been. Texting just allows them to communicate at more of a distance, and therefore with more bravado.

Some though, as pointed out, do seem to be just skipping the back and forth game and going right to it. Maybe they don't realise that other kids are only pretending to be that brave? In any case, I think they're missing out.

no it's true, alexandra. i have some pre-teen music students, and the stuff they say and text ....well, blows my mind. we all had crushes and stuff, but these kids are going steady at age 12, they're married on facebook, they're physically involved, and they break up in weeks! i'm sooo old.

The cat and mouse game went out when the chat rooms came in and then progressed from there. :-) Sad but true, people don't even have to really know each other to supposedly have a "relationship".
