This is a classic example of childhood frustration.  Was the kid alone or did mom or dad have to tell him/her that "No, we can't get it out of the tree." ?  I've seen many kites "eaten" by trees and even lost a few to them myself.  It's always a Charlie Brown moment when no amount of yanking, pulling, jiggling, shaking can dislodge a kite from the hungry embrace of a tree.  Wistful is a very good description, Helen! :-)
