Hearing about the shooting that took place at Ft. Hood, Texas today brought the memories of losing a friend at Virginia Tech in 2007 crashing back into place. I am sick to my stomach at the atrocity of people shooting each other, but as Pres. Obama said, "It’s difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil." Twelve people were killed today, at least seven of which were soldiers most likely preparing to deploy (the medical facility where the shooting took place was for last minute appointments before deployment). The people we lost today served our country and were betrayed by one of their own.
As their families come to grips with the events of today, I believe that we as citizens should step up and give them the support they give us daily by simply being the loved ones of soldiers. It is a difficult job and they often go unnoticed. I found a website that delivers ready-made dinners that only need to be heated up. These meals are fancy and a bit pricy for one person to pay for, but small donations add up and together, we could help these families by taking the worry of cooking off of their plates.
