Herring gulls perched on wave-washed rocks.  THIS is the essence of my childhood memories of summertime on the shores of Lake Superior.  I really love that lake and the north shore region in Minnesota.  I remember trying to swim in that lake in high summer and we would all get blue lips and be shivering the whole time we were in it.  The surface temps never get much higher than 54 degrees and that can drop 10 degrees a foot beneath the waves.  Beautiful, but chilly!
