I think that is "our" nature, that very elusive "perfect" shot.....

Thnks Kim! I don't know about "mastered" though. I believe that I will always be in search of the ever elusive "perfect" shot and I think that I'm okay with that ;-)

Two way street? I can't imagine. Lucky you didn't get trampled by all the traffic! :)

We have the same equipment. I actually curse night shots, because I can't get good ones at all with the A700. I would have to use tri-pod and remote. That makes this shot even more...captivating to me! I'm really envious of your ability to capture what I have such difficulty capturing. It does have me looking to a Canon 5D mark ii. I'm just not impressed with my lowlight shots at all, so I tend to not even try. Only because of what I've created prior. This does look like a master piece. Perfect highlights, shadows, but then that is what photography is all about! Looks like you have it mastered! Very impressive.

I'm so pleased that you all like this shot! The crispness is due to my equipment and steady(?) hand. I had a monopod that really helped me a lot throughout our trip and my camera is a Sony D700. As I said earlier, night shots are uber tricky!

totally agree with you guys that the lighting in the shot (other than the great subject) is fascinating!

Sha is right, this does have the feel of a painting and for me this is because, in spite of the low light, you were able to capture such crisp detail. How did you do that?

Thanks Barry and Lisa! The lighting on shots like this is often very difficult. Lights tend to flare and wash out. Too little, it's too dark. Too much and it either flares or washes out completely. Orvieto is a beautiful little town and I highly recommend it if you're going to be in Italy. BTW this is a two-way street for autos. Really. I didn't believe it either.

i love night shots like this. they seem to be less common. maybe they are hard to light? but they have a great feel. esp if in italy! ;-)
