Thanks, all.

When it was announced that the newest National Cemetery would be in this particular location, I knew it was going to be a beautiful place.  Gently rolling hills, fields of bluebonnets, trees of all types - almost too beautiful for the purpose for which it was chosen.  And yet, why not?  Are our country's best unentitled to a beautiful and peaceful final resting place?

I pass it every time I visit my mother and sister, every time I attend a family reunion, every time I head out to look for bluebonnets.  I've been taking pictures there since long before they completed the walkways and various memorials, before the benches, before the new trees.  I love that they left all the mesquite and prickly pear and wildflowers bordering the grass lawns.  This was the first time I'd seen fresh graves.  I've often just parked the car and gotten out and walked among the headstones.  I know it sounds whacky, but I've talked to the graves from time to time.  I just feel very peaceful among those who rest there.  This time I was horrendously surprised by the growth.  I know two of my uncles, both WWII veterans, have been buried there recently, and I'm sure there are countless other older servicepersons who have died.  That helps me come to terms with the fact that there are also so many young ones as well.  I always read the stones closest to me and note the ages of those buried under them.  I hope some day someone will do the same to remember me.

Unfortunately, a very beautiful picture.

Such a sad looking place.  All of those headstones, standing at attention in orderly rows...as once did those who lie below...
