It is weird how our artistic view of something doesn't necessarily match up with what nature actualizes.  Your teacher was just a little short-sighted I think! B&W has always been a favorite of mine.  It starkens everything to a texture and contrast and makes you really look at the composition instead of overwhelming your eye with blasts of color.

Beautiful black and white. There is something about black and white photos that is so magical. For some reason when I saw this picture it made me recall when as a small child I realized that most tree's branches reach for the sky, yet when drawing Christmas trees I was being told to draw the branches pointing down .. I even got in trouble arguing with a teacher in school about this.
