Some very deep and dark ones.  This one was actually not too bad as I was standing on the remnants of a road when I took this shot.  At times we would find ourselves orienteering by following our compasses and trying to match our surroundings with the relative flatness of a topographic map.  Occasionally you have to trust to dumb luck and a gut feeling.  Roads can be few and far between and they're not necessarily exactly where the map says they are.  Recently, we started to rely upon GPS and the dead reckoning is a little less, but if the magic box isn't working, well, you're even more screwed 'cause a lot of the folks out there today can't read a map properly.  Makes me glad that I'm done wth it and I don't have to have 8-10 people relying on me to get them unlost when the gizmo crashes.

As the title implys, this is way out there.  I shot this on a archaeological survey that took us several miles off of the beaten path.  This is in the swamps of northern Wisconsin.  Not a place to go unless you're uber careful and have some woodlore about you.  I have been fortunate in my life in that I was taught from a very young age how to navigate in areas like this. My profession for over 20 years was that of a Field Archaeologist and I was responsible for getting my crews in and out of places like this within a certain timeframe and with no damage to any of us.  Now, I just do it for my photography's sake and I'm usually alone.
