That's an interesting possibility!  I've seen those steps at Bandolier National Monument but hadn't thought that there might be some at Joshua Tree!

I love that reflection too!  I don't know whether those divets are potholes or mortars.  They seem so regular that I tend to think that they might be mortars and that the boulder has just shifted over millenia so that they are no longer upright.  So many mysteries!  This is my favorite hike in Joshua Tree!

I love the reflection!  The sandstone out west has always fascinated me.  Those divots in that boulder look like they might be ground.  It's hard to tell, but often Native Americans would use what was at hand for their immediate needs and if this is an historically wet area, they likely used it for thousands of years. After reconsidering though my guess is that it's a riverbed and those divots are actually "potholes".

Oops!  Sorry, I didn't mean to over analyze it!  I like the texture and the light very much ;-)

Oh thank you, Anthony!  It's a challenge to get the warmth of the sun on the boulders above with the cool feel of the sand and boulders below.  The pools themselves freeze on occasion so, although it is the desert, it is a very cool setting down in the wash.

Oh thank you!  This place resonates for me emotionally and it is a challenge to capture it as I experience it.  This is a deep desert wash and in late winter and early spring there are these beautiful, icy cold vernal pools.  All around them you see prints from where mountain lions, coyotes, and big-horn sheep have recently come to drink.
