You're right Lorraine.  I meant to say sub-tropical. Do those that you see there have the red bracts?

These plants grow all over South Texas. The color in this one is unusually pretty.

I think it's way over-hyped as a Christmas plant and that's most of the reason you can have colorings like this in the photo. They've played with the nuts and bolts of this plant for entirely too long. I like them well enough, but they're just another interesting plant to me and Christmas is the only time you can actually buy them at retail. They're a tropical plant that needs an almost greenhouse environment to do well. Not exactly a good candidate for the upper mid-west where I live.

Thanks Lisa! This is a little different look at this often misunderstood plant. It takes a lot of futzing to get it to throw red (or colored) bracts ad most folks (me included) just let them die after the holidays.
