Ok, I have an answer and downloaded one more shot to make it more apparent.  As soon as I saw the original I had a "D'oh" moment!!  The limbs were used to hang the tobacco leaves from.  I knew that...

I need to go back and look at the un-cropped originals and see where that branch came from or went.  The place was a mess.  And it's been too long since I was standing there!!

I stood inside this barn for a very long time, just listening to the old man talk.  It was almost too sad to see how badly deteriorated the building is when you consider the time and sweat and muscle that went into building it.  I could almost picture a big Percheron parked just outside the door waiting to be hitched up.  Across the way was the dooryard of the house and the remnants of an old tree that my husband said served as "home" for millions of family baseball games.
