I do understand that idea very well. I used to avoid certain movies because I didn't think they'd appeal to me, but when I allowed myself to experience them I might not necessarily like them, but they definitely sent me an emotional message. Static art is the same way. The presence of an "almost art" significance can be very frustrating. I try to tweak my less-than-great pieces to see if I can bring something out of them. Ordinarily I try to present my art with a minimum of dodging, but sometimes it's just necessary.

that's interesting! see, i'm a little different. there is alot of stuff that speaks to me and that i recognize as art, but that i don't necessarily pick. i'm not sure why. maybe it's just because ALOT of stuff speaks to me, but i can't have everything that speaks to me. i'm not sure. i'm glad i can recognize what is "art" many times regardless of whether or not i'd want it over my fireplace. maybe i'm weird. sometimes i feel weird, because i can walk past a bunch of things and say art, art, crap, art, almost art, more crap....and then i might go consciously pick something that is less arty than something else because it makes me feel a certain way. movies are like that for me too. there are intensely deep excellent movies that i watch and say wow...that was fantastic! but that doesn't mean i LIKE them. does that make sense? meaning i don't want to hang out with them. the art that frustrates me the most is the "almost art". for me that's the stuff that comes sooo close but isn't quite there. i want to go shake something and say FIX THAT!
Thanks, Lisa! I've always found that a fine art photograph has to appeal to a person on a level that is deeper than just "liking" it. The art will speak to the viewer and if it touches them on a level that they're paying attention to, then they'll recognize it immediately and will want to possess the art in one form or another. I've seen people look right through my photographs before and then when a particular piece is pointed out to them they become mesmerized with a memory which the art has induced and only then do they actually see it. It can be very powerful to watch happen.

this series is particularly excellent. it's not what i would buy for my house. but that's cuz the subject matter isn't my thing the way barns or some of your other stuff is. however, from an artistic point of view, i think these are superior stuff!!!
