Hooray for teachers that make us think!

This is a cypress knee that my sister gave me years ago when I lived in Florida.  The wall behind it is indeed thickly and poorly painted.  The "gossamer" is a very small, light spiderweb which stretches between the two protrubences. You have to look very closely.

I am always guessing at what I am seeing! I had a biology teacher in high school who would tape to the chalk board a picture of an object where just on part was really blown up messing with the brains ability to put the piece into a recognizable image ... makes the brain get all crazy! Okay, so am I looking at wood against a thickly painted wall?
