i was able to catch "the mirror has two faces" again with jeff bridges and barbra steisand. aside from it being a nice little romance, it made some great commentary on the role of physical looks in love. but i was mostly struck by what a great actress streisand is. while she is a great singer, i have always enjoyed her acting more than her singing. and i wish she acted more. her directing abilities are also excellent in this. it's a nice story well acted by her with the great touch of lauren bacall as the mother. not a grrrrreat movie, but a nice time. we need more actors like her.
We just returned from the newest film from Disneynature, "Chimpanzee"! A powerful, moving drama inside the lives of a chimpanzee family, following the life of it's newest member, Oscar. His life, like the lives of the others in the troop, is not always easy, but amazing to behold! The cinematography, not only of the chimps but of the rainforest itself, was breathtaking!! A true learning and entertaining experience for all ages!! I highly recommend it for those animal/nature lovers out there!!
if you haven't seen "The Motorcycle Diaries" yet, I highly recommend it. It's in Spanish with subtitles. It's a fantastic trip around South America with two young doctors on an adventure. One of the docs is Che Guevara. The scenery is breathtaking. The acting is great. Go somewhere new.....:-)
I have been thinking a lot about "Apocalypse Now" ... as well as "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and other war movies... some have made huge differences on our collective consciences... but then, I don't really keep very current... haven't been to the theatre in several years.
thanks for these reviews, guys! keep 'em comin! i'm going to post these on fb now...:-)
I just came home from watching The Hunger Games. I have to preface this by saying that this was not my choice of movie and that I would have seen another movie while my daughter was watching it if there was something worth while seeing.
As you all know this is the happening movie right now. All I have to say is that the whole idea of sending children out to kill each other off is a sick idea and you will not want to root for any of the characters because that means the killing of a child by another child. Oh sure, they will try to manipulate you with the cute and cuddly and the mean kids ,but, all the same, these are children. I dont know , maybe you have to be a tween or teen to get this stuff. I do not think they let enough time settle in to get emotionally attached to any of the characters . Maybe they just assumed you read the book. You know what they say about assuming dont you. If that is the case then that is just not a good way to get the movie across. The movie should stand on its own as a singular entity .
The actual killing was done in such a way as to show the least amount of gore. So that is a plus I guess.
I saw Iron Lady last month, the Meryl Streep movie about Margaret Thatcher. Unfortunately, the movie does just to neither Ms. Thatcher's accomplishments nor Ms. Streep's talents. Streep justifiably won an Oscar for her portrayal of Thatcher in later life, and the make-up also justifiably won an Oscar. But I found the remainder of the film disappointing. It jumps from present (Thatcher as a elderly woman with Alzheimer's onset) to past, starting with Thatcher (not played by Streep)as young woman. Even though I consider myself well-read in current affairs for the past 40 years, many of the episodes portrayed were unfamiliar and therefore confusing. The predominant portrayal of Thatcher is thrugh her Alzheimer's. In the opening scene, she is at the neighborhood grocer in her kerchief, unrecognized, throughout the movie, she is repeatedly "visited" by her deceased husband until he finally departs to his final rest, leaving her searching for him through the house. I felt it a total pity that such a vibrant subject, with such a gifted actor to portray her, was treated so shallowly and disrespectfully.
i need to chill out with some movies this weekend. but i did NOT need larry crowne. it's supposed to be a little light romance with tom hanks and julia roberts. it's just horrible. it has no script. no likeable characters. no character development. even the clothes they wear is horrible. do NOT see this movie unless you want to holler things at it! :-)
ok, who are your oscar choices, gang???
