'This House Will Stand' - new gospelish lyric......

'This House Will Stand'

copyright 2010 by Rick Reiley

This house will stand

In the heat of summer

In winter winds

It will not move

It will not be broken

It will not be shifted

It will not be bent

It will stand true

This house will stand

As a midnight beacon

As a welcome light

To one and all

It will not flicker

It will not dim

It will survive

Mankind's fall

(Chorus)

That's the Way They Like It- copyright 2010 by Rick Reiley

'That's the Way They Like It'

copyright 2010 by Rick Reiley

The rich keep gettin' richer

The poor man he just sweats

The middle man keeps gettin' squeezed

Goin' further into debt

But that's the way some folks like it

Some folks like it that way

That's the way they like it

No matter what they say

You don't have to understand it

That's just the way it is

Life is for the living

And…

When You Gotta Go

'When You Gotta Go'

copyright 2010 by Rick Reiley

Dig my grave, make it shallow

Heck just lay me on the ground

Clear a path and play the fiddle

And then dance all around

I have had a good ride

So carry on with the show

I'd just as soon stay here

But when you gotta go -you gotta go

(Chorus)

When you gotta go-You gotta go

If you're gonna get there on time

I hope to see you later

In the afterglow… Continue

Lone Ranger Hat

This started to be about what it might feel like to be the last flock of chickens, the last outhouse, the last milk man - in town. Thinking of the time when the milk man would walk right into the house in the

morning and re-stock the refrigerator for us. His name was Danny

Pinson.

And the last outhouse in town was on ninth street down by Cleveland street. The last guy to raise chickens in the city limits was Richard Mathes and that wasn't too long ago. A couple of locals fit…

'Over the river and through the woods...

...to grandmother's house we go'.......took on a different meaning to me after visits to Grandma Reiley's house.

Prior to that I envisioned fun and adventure and mystique and gingerbread cookies and all sorts of wonder.

. At Grandma Reiley's we got out of the car to discover a skinny, plainly dressed woman with thin lips and a dour look on her face. No KoolAid or punch at grandma's house. No cookies and milk. Just a simple meal with water. After saying grace. Simple times.

I never… Continue

Starting School

'Starting School'

When I began the first grade mom would take me to Brooks Clothiers downtown to buy my t-shirts, underwear and my red label Farrah 'husky' jeans. Then off

to TG and Y next door to get pencils, my Big Chief tablet, and

crayolas. Oh and then around the corner…

Long black hair. Motown, Carole King influence. Peter Paul and Mary had three dogs one night. One sweaty Christmas in the Fifth dimension. God I miss her.

Is this Any Way to Run A Business? Yeah, I Guess So......

'Is This the Way to Run A Business?'

The evolution of clerks in the mainstream American marketplace is a continuing mystery to me.

I used to feel at least a little bit important to the businesses I frequented. As if I mattered somehow to them.

That's still the case in a few places but more and more it's blatantly obvious that they don't care if I live or die just as long as they can collect my money and get me quickly out of their way. In fact, they often act as if… Continue

Your Input, Your City, Your Town

'Your Input'

What is a city's obligations to its residents? Whatever it can afford I suppose within the demands of said residents. When the residents don't voice any opinion its obligations are whatever the elected officials decide. You can go to any city council meeting anywhere, anytime and generally find only a handful of folks (if that) watching the proceedings. Unless of course there's a controversy stewing. Everyone wants to know about the controversy and some are quite… Continue

Father's Day

Father's Day

One of the earliest memories I have of my father was when we were on vacation in Colorado in the early 50's. Several hours after leaving the motel that morning headed west I

suddenly discovered I'd left my stuffed monkey – Zippy- back at the

motel room. After screaming and crying loud enough and with enough

juvenile authority I…
