A time to let go...…

This has been one of the most heart-wrenching weeks of work for me in a while. One story to share. I was admitting a woman in her 50's (who is expected to live 4 weeks at the most) to hospice services. These appointments generally last close to 4 hours, and much of my 26 pages of paperwork doesn't take lots of brain cells. I take cues from the patient and family as to how much "extra" conversation in which to engage. I felt a particular kinship with this patient, and we talked about…

Today is my 48th birthday. That number gets noticed in my family. And not in a good way.



In some ways, it has taken on a somewhat dark significance. Mother died suddenly at the age 48. She appeared healthy, but there was a silent aneurysm that ruptured and killed her. Blood shed selfishly

shouting crying here to stay

bones and flesh turn to clay

this is chaos and hate

I scream to hear life

Thunder clashes in the heart…

Heavy lids wish to rest

But it is not time yet

Staring at the clock on the wall

I see that it is 7:43 in the evening

The sun is setting, the moon is rising

But it is not time yet

Time tells me there is much to do

A long day is nearly behind me

I wish to rest now

But it's not time…

I'm not your typical girl

Or really your typical anything

Yeah sometimes I'm a lot to handle

But definitely worth the difficult times

I'm done apologizing for where I've been

And for who I was, because I love who I am

Not a beauty queen

Not the trophy girl to show off

I don't want to wear a plastic…

The sun has set

But it's not time for bed yet

The rain is still falling

And I hear the night calling



I think of the sun

Where it is now, are people having fun?

While many here prepare to go to bed

Elsewhere upon daylight's beam do…

Nothing I could do will take the pain away

Such senseless violence was wrought today

How can we keep hate at bay?



In times like these, it's easy to lose hope

How does one learn to cope

It's so easy to cry, to get angry, to…

I've been looking all day

But my sanity is no where to be found

There's so much I have to say

But the words won't come, to my dismay



So isolated, feeling cut off from those I love

Frustrated and just at my wits…

Thoughts jumble together within my mind

Tangled in thick yarn

Unable to separate them

Wanting to break them free

So that perhaps then you will see

The words are there

At the tip of my tongue

If only I could make a connection

Between my mouth and my mind

Perhaps then an explanation you would…

The birds sing

The sound echos all around me

I try to trap the music in a jar

To listen to it at a later date

The snow melts, more and more each day

Bright and warm, the sun comes to greet me

Squirrels scamper to and fro

So it would seem that Spring is here

Winter’s chill still…

A seemingly quiet beach I roamed

Warm sand beneath my feet

Quieting my mind of all thoughts

Seeking peace and tranquility

No worries, cares, or voices to tug at me

It’s easier to find a quiet place

Than it is to quiet the mind

The voices try to break free

Emotions try to overwhelm me
