This is a beautiful Spanish song that's about five hundred years old.  I first learned it in college and was amazed to learn the Monkees had done it, on record and on their Christmas show.

I prefer local venues and artists because I am one.  I go to local venues more than major artist appearances, because I'm friends with local singer songwriters.  My friend Tracy Thorne appears locally regularly.  I used to go to Gerde's Folk City and Mike Porco, the son of Bob Porco who ran Gerde's, hosts folk events regularly at the Gaslight around the corner from Gerde's original site.

There's a country singer from the Rockies named Darryl Purpose who recently released a CD called NEXT TIME AROUND.  I like his stuff.  He has great lyrics and the feel of Garth Brooks meets Warren Zevon, a Midwestern lonesomeness mixed with California cynicism.

  • wiffledust

i prefer local small intimate venues, because i feel like i can see and hear everything. i don't understand football stadium size shows. it's very difficult to connect that way.....darryl purpose is excellent!!!

  • wiffledust

Has anyone heard the new Susan Werner stuff yet?

  • Dave Kelly

I heard Kiya Heartwood and Melissa Greener on Saturday at Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse in Huntsville TX. Been listening to CDs in car and at home. Will review later.

Maroam Call's new CD, Live in Europe arrived today. Some new songs and some old stuff, all good.,

  • wiffledust

    thanks for that, dave!

Buffy Sainte-Marie gave a free concert during the tour promoting her new CD, RUNNING FOR THE DRUM, at the Museum of the American Indian at Bowling Green in Manhattan recently. As it was a chance to get her autograph and be photographed with her, I bought her CD after the show and got it signed. (Pictures are on my Facebook page.)  At 72 she still has a powerhouse of a voice and the heart and soul of a Cree Native who gives concerts that are as much pow-wows as performances. Great stuff.

(P.S. There's a documentary about her life and activism, A MULTIMEDIA LIFE, included with the CD.)

  • wiffledust

I've been listening to some older Cheryl Wheeler tunes...her voice is like a cello!!!

  • wiffledust

  • wiffledust

  • Pamela Drake

I love country singer Darryl Purpose's new CD, NEXT TIME AROUND.  He's touring and I wanted to see him but he didn't hit the NY metro area during his Northeast swing.  I'll just have to wait to get my CD signed. :|

  • wiffledust

I'm listening to "Love Has Come for You" by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell..it's really good, you guys. Steve's banjo playing is very haunting, and Edie has a great folk voice. The songs are simple and sweet....sweet in a good way, not in a saccharine way. Check it out!

  • Pamela Drake

I love Stevie Wonder and lately his songs play in my head even when I'm not playing them on youtube.  His rhythms on uptempo songs are contagious and nobody else has his voice.  "Part Time Lover" is a favorite uptempo of his for me.

  • wiffledust

oh yes, maggie...they steve and edie sound incredible together! she has a great americana voice. i wouldn't have thought that really. it's more lilting than gillian welch, but they have a similar thing going on to gillian and dave rawlings. the banjo is very expressive on this record. steve is an incredibly talented man! ...to undo look at the little red x in the upper right corner. ..pamela, agreed. stevie wonder is certainly one of the greatest talents of the century!

  • wiffledust

folks, lori mckenna's "Massachusetts" is out now. IT"S SO GOOD!

Right now, Nothing. Since  midnight, Country and Westers, Gene Watson and his 'Love in the Hot Afternoon' and '14 Caret Mind'. Before that "Willie" and 'Blackjack County Chains'. Back in my boot scooten days this my first exposure to Willie. IIRC, it was before he moved to Austin.

  • wiffledust

i'm listening to rosanne cash on an episode of austin city limits. her voice is so pure, so resonant. and so very unique. love it.

  • Dave Kelly

Since noon, I have had Sara Hickman's new CD 'Shine' looping through my system,.  Going to Galveston on the 23rd to hear her sing.

  • Pamela Drake

I don't have sound on Internet on this computer (or internet on my laptop) right now, but what's going through my mind is "Burning for You," by Blue Oyster Cult. I'd be playing BOC if I had sound on youtube. Allen Lanier, their longtime keyboardist, died yesterday at age 67. I met him at CBGB's 6 months after Patti Smith left him and went to Detroit to marry Fred "Sonic" Smith. I could tell he missed Patti. Now we who knew him miss him.

  • Rick Reiley

    Anything by Paul Adams. http://www.pauladams.org/music.html

Jefferson Ross 'Isle of Hope'.http://jeffersonross.com/ And Ashley Monical from Austin......especially Man from New York..http://www.ashleymonical.com/music.html oh and have I mentioned Oklahoma's own, John Moreland? Wow is all I can say. http://johnmoreland.bandcamp.com/

Went to see/hear Red Molly last night. Great concert. This is the first time I've been to one of their concerts.

Pigged out on CDs. Bought 6.  Spent the day looping through them and enjoy some new songs and new sounds.

They played at McGonigles Mucky Duck and had a standing room only crowd. Over a 100 fans attending.

  • wiffledust

i love red molly, dave!! beautiful harmonies!

  • wiffledust

i love the little victor phonograph symbol! on what devices do you listen to your music most frequently?

  • Pamela Drake

These days I use my Smartphone to pull up YouTube when I want songs on command, but for mood music, there's the Blues channel on Cablevision Music Choice. They play roots that greats like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton cut their teeth on, including Muddy Waters, Elmore James, B.B. King and Lightning Hopkins, as well as great women blues singers like Odetta, Etta James and Dinah Washington.
