My absolute favorite dessert is a raisin-nut pie that my mother used to make and now my son makes for family holiday dinners (all two of them).  It's made with raisins, walnuts, Karo syrup and I don't know what else, other than it gives me 10 lbs. and 2 cavities per slice.  The reason I love it so much goes back to my 7th birthday.  My mother made me a gorgeous cake, a white cat sleeping on a pink pillow.  My birthday falls around Thanksgiving so I had to take my cake up to my grandmother's and there were so many people that I never got one bite of this gorgeous cake.  I was heartbroken.  So my mother started making the raisin-nut pie for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and only she, one uncle & I were allowed to have any.  Every bite brings back memories of my mother, and how much I miss her.

Mason smile at Claire though there were many years between them

She saw him holding violin and bow

She stood there transfixed with a child's anticapation-

That only childlike innocence can know

My mother was a ray of sunshine, a supporter of all my endeavors, an alcoholic who spent her last 40 years in the certainty my father would finally return to her. (They divorced in 1964- she never remarried or dated). She managed to lay the vodka down 10 years before her death. And never once admitted she'd ever taken a drink. She was a beautiful soul. I miss her.
