I'm Old Enough to Remember....

This is a group where you can add at any time anything  you remember from "back then" in our society  that isn't the same now. It'll be fun to read how things have changed from a first hand experience of the posters here!

I'm old enough to remember color TV being a big deal. Seeing the Witch's face from The Wizard of Oz in GREEN on the big tv was so exciting!
  • J. Barrett Wolf

...being in my sixth grade class and hearing that the President (Kennedy) had been shot in the temple... and, being as I was Jewish and I knew the President wasn't, I wondered what he was doing in a temple.

...Pumping gas at my father's station in Glen Cove Long Island for less than thirty cents a gallon.

...being there to pump gas before self-service gas stations.

...selling coffee to people waiting in gas lines in the '70s.

On this steamy day,I'm reminded of my parents sleeping outdoors with their feet in those blow up wading pools. The neighbors were out there, too.

No kids allowed.Remember when your folks did little things for themselves?

And you saw that it was good.

  • wiffledust

YES! Very cool, Ilene. Keep 'em comin', folks!

I'm old enough to remember when EVERYTHING was still in Black and White! ;-)

  • wiffledust

  • Amy Chapmon

I remember when gas was under $1 per gallon... heck I remember being old enough to drive and getting a whole tank for $10 or less.

i remember clothes being more of a quality item than now, and much more expensive. we went on "outings" to buy coats, for example. or to a special store to buy shoes. there was nothing like payless or tj maxx. the clothes were made in america or europe, and they were pricier too.
  • Helen

I remember when you wanted to find something out, you had to look it up in a book or encyclopedia.
  • wiffledust

not only that, helen, but you had to use a card catelogue at the library!!!
  • Amy Chapmon

Yes, there were shoe stores and it was a big deal for my mom to get my sister and me fitted for school shoes.  Actually this one shop (forget the name, but it was in Florence, KY during the 70's and 80's) had a hidey hole in the wall and a slide!  I guess that way children were occupied while the adults shopped
  • wiffledust

and do you remember those thingies they put your feet in to measure them??? and a real live person waited on you? and they probably supported a family on that salary???
  • Amy Chapmon

Yes, encyclopedias! We also had to look stuff up in phone books and yellow pages.  And buy an atlas or map to go on a long trip
  • Amy Chapmon

Yes.... those metal shoe thingies!  And it was an actual older adult waiting on you, not a student working at minimum wage while going to school
  • wiffledust

i remember when nobody ever EVER drank water from a plastic water bottle
  • Amy Chapmon

I remember when my sister was trying to get vegetarian fare in our town (Cincinnati, OH) in the early 90's... not only was "french fries" or some side dish the only option at every restaurant she tried, but a waiter actually believed that a cincy style chilli (with ground beef) was veggie-friendly and tried to serve it to her
  • Maryanne Mesple

I'm old enough to remember leaving the house right after breakfast and not returning until dinner and it was not big deal. I am old enough to remember gas wars and hoping the station across the street would get the gas down to 26 cents a gallon and fill the the "bug" using the money I collected from cashing in glass pop bottles that I found along the road. :-)

  • Maryanne Mesple

o o o and those black smudge pots on roadways used as warnings for motorist about construction
  • Elle MacNeil

Where's the "like" button?!?  I remember most of all of what you all mentioned!  Not sure I can keep up.

Did anyone mention "rabbit ears" to get your maybe 10 TV channels, if you were lucky??
